Enzo Francescoli

Enzo Francescoli Uriarte (born November 12, 1961 in Montevideo) is a former Uruguayan football player of Italian and Spanish origin, who retired in 1997. He played 72 times for the Uruguay national team between 1982 and 1997, making him the most capped outfield player in Uruguayan international football.[1] He currently is the vice president of GOL TV and Tenfield.

Club career

His official debut was with the Uruguayan team Montevideo Wanderers. He played several years for River Plate of Argentina where he won five league titles and the Copa Libertadores in 1996 in his two spells with the club.

He also played for the French Racing Club de Paris (Matra Racing Paris at the time), Olympique de Marseille, and the Italian teams Cagliari and Torino.

International career

Francescoli played 72 times for the Uruguay national team scoring 15 goals, between 1982 and 1997. He made appearances at the 1986 and 1990 FIFA World Cups. He won the Copa América three times with Uruguay in 1983, 1987 and 1995, he also played in the 1989 and 1993 editions of the tournament. Es uno de los pocos jugadores que en el fútbol argentino fue respetado por todas las hinchadas, se llevaba bien con sus compañeros y por sobre todas las cosas, era un caballero. Es considerado como el uruguayo muy exitoso de River Plate junto a su compatriota, Walter Gómez, quién jugó en los años 50. El campeonato argentino 1985-86 fue en el que dio la primera vuelta olímpica siendo la figura y el goleador del torneo con 25 tantos, 6 más que su seguidor más cercano. En 1986 no pudo jugar la Copa Libertadores de América, que luego sería ganada frente al América de Cali, ya que fue vendido a Francia, donde jugó en el Racing Matra y en el Olympique de Marsella y fue declarado el Mejor jugador extranjero de la Ligue 1, en 1990. Luego jugó en la Serie A de Italia, en el Cagliari y el Torino. Uno de sus admiradores más conocidos, mientras Francescoli jugaba para el Olympique, fue Zinedine Zidane, quien luego llamaría Enzo a uno de sus hijos en homenaje a Francescoli. Regresó a River Plate el 7 de septiembre de 1994 en un partido contra Nacional de Montevideo, por la Supercopa, en el que River empató 2-2 con un gol suyo. Ese mismo año, logró el Torneo Apertura de manera invicta con la conducción técnica de Américo Gallego, siendo máximo goleador del Torneo con 12 tantos en 16 partidos. En 1996 ganó la Copa Libertadores de América venciendo en la final a América de Cali de Colombia por 2-0. Ha sido el extranjero que anotó más goles por River Plate. En 1998 decidió retirarse del fútbol profesional. Celebró su despedida en un partido jugado en la cancha de River Plate frente a Peñarol. Fue elegido el Mejor Jugador de América en 1984

Legacy

He was noted for his grace and fluid abilities on the ball. These qualities would later influence the style of French midfielder Zinedine Zidane, who has stated that Francescoli was his favorite player as a young boy and even named one of his sons Enzo.

Francescoli is known as El Principe (Spanish) or Le Prince (French), which means The Prince. He was named by Pelé as one of the top 100 greatest living footballers in March 2004.
